Laser Dentistry

Laser Dentistry cleaning teeth

Laser dentistry is the use of lasers to treat certain dental issues. It has been used in clinical dental practices since 1989.

Lasers can be used to treat sensitivity, tooth decay, and gum disease and can even aid the teeth whitening process.  Dr. Richardson and Dr. Townsley,  at Townsley Family Dentistry can help show you how laser dentistry may be the right choice for your next procedure.

Our dentists often prefer the use of lasers because of their ability to focus on an exact point, causing much less damage to surrounding tissue than many other treatments.

About Laser Dentistry

Benefits of Laser Dentistry?

  • They make procedures more comfortable for patients

  •  Reducing the need for anesthesia

  •  Reduce the risk of infection,

  •  Require less time for the healing process

  •  Lasers can also reduce bleeding and the need for sutures

Are there any risks associated with laser dentistry?

Despite the many benefits, people may still have concerns about the safety of exposure to lasers. Although there are normal risks involved with any type of treatment or surgery, the FDA mentions that laser surgeries and laser dental treatments do not carry the level of possible long-term risk that X-rays and some other types of radiation do. This is because of their use of non-ionizing radiation.

What are the limitations of laser dentistry?

Laser dental treatment can do many things to help patients, but there are a few limitations. If there is too much damage to a tooth from decay, lasers cannot be used to treat it. Cavities between two teeth or a tooth with a filling also cannot be treated with lasers.  Our dentist will decide at your exam if laser dentistry is the right option for you.
