Many people feel nervous about having dental work done, especially more invasive or involved procedures.  At Townsley Family Dentistry in Foley, AL, one of the options we provide to you and your family is sedation for dental procedures. Sedation dentistry using Nitrous Oxide is a safe way to help our patients be more comfortable.

About Sedation Dentistry

What is nitrous oxide sedation treatment?

One solution for easing this anxiety is nitrous oxide sedation, also commonly called “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas inhaled through the nose during dental procedures to reduce anxiety and pain and promote relaxation. Our dentist offers nitrous oxide sedation to our patients in Foley, AL, for a relaxing, stress-free dental experience.

What is the procedure like?

Before administering this treatment, the dentist will review your medical history, take your vital signs, and make sure to select the correct size nasal hood for your face. The dentist will monitor the machine to ensure the proper amount of gas is being administered.

Under nitrous oxide sedation, you will not be asleep but should feel relaxed and not fully alert. After the procedure is finished, you will receive 100% oxygen for 3 to 5 minutes. Because the laughing gas leaves your system so quickly, you are able to drive yourself home.

What are the side effects of nitrous oxide?

Under the care of professional dentists such as Dr. Richardson and Dr. Townsley, the use of nitrous oxide sedation is considered safe by the American Dental Association. Many people have no side effects after the use of nitrous oxide.
